The rulers of every era in history had recognized the immense importance of the Armor for their protection when the borders of the state were at sea. That is why forts have been guarding the sea and beaches for many centuries at strategic places in the sea. The Angre family, the guardians of the Konkan coast, were the kings of the sea. For centuries, many generations of Angrians have defended the seas and shores with might.
When you reach the fort by boat, at a distance of 100 meters from the main gate, you can see a sparse rampart and a broken gate near the sea. Next to it are two towers, about 30 feet [30 m] high, with steps leading to the gates. The main door is still in good condition and looks very beautiful. The door has not fallen down much and the arch on the door is in perfect condition. Many sculptures can be seen on the door.
The fort has a 4 feet high burglar gate and after descending its steps a path leads to the sea towers.
To the west of the fort, these towers are 25-30 feet high, standing in a row, these 24 towers look like an oval in a floor.
Suvarnadurg is an important water fort in Konkan, famous for its greatness. The fort is situated on eight acres in the sea at a distance of two hundred and fifty meters from the shore near Harne port in Dapoli taluka. The fort can be reached in 30 minutes by boat from Harne port. If the monsoon ends and goes around January, there is less grass on the fort.
Kanhoji Angre was one of the pioneers who received the honorary degree of Sarkhel from the Chhatrapati. इ.स. Around 1640, Tukoji Angre, the father of Kanhoji Angre, was with Shahaji Raja. After the end of Nizamshahi, this part of South Konkan came under Adilshahi rule. After that Shivaji Maharaj immediately conquered Suvarnadurga. However, the sparse ramparts on the fort may have been built earlier during the Nizam’s rule. Later, however, In 1669 and even after that, Suvarnadurg was repaired by the Marathi Armada and the importance of the fort increased. इ.स. When Kanhoji Angre became the chief officer of the Marathi Armory in 1698, the Armor’s camps were established at Suvarnadurg and Vijaydurg. इ.स. Suvarnadurg was under the control of Peshwas without any battle till 1731. Finally, Colonel Kennedy, an English officer, In 1818, the fort was conquered by the Peshwas.
